Privacy Policy

SailingTerms can be used as a guest without creating an account. If you choose to create an account, we collect the following:

• Account information: Your email address, display name, and a password (stored only as a secure hash) when you register — or the name and email shared by Google or Apple if you use “Sign in with Google/Apple”. We never see your Google or Apple password.
• Learning data: Your saved favourite terms, quiz results and progress, and language preference, stored with your account so they sync across your devices.
• Push notification data: If you enable notifications, we store a push token for your device along with its platform, model, app version, and your notification preferences, so we only send you the notification types you have opted into.
• Information you provide: If you contact us via email or the contact form, we receive your name, email address, and the content of your message.
• Usage data: We may collect anonymous, aggregated usage statistics (such as which screens are visited most often) to help us improve the app. This data cannot be used to identify you personally.
• Device information: Standard technical data such as device type, operating system version, and app version may be collected for crash reporting and performance monitoring.
• Advertising data: See the “Advertising” section below.

If you enable the optional biometric lock (Face ID / Touch ID / fingerprint), authentication is performed entirely by your device’s operating system — biometric data never leaves your device and is never shared with us.

We use the information we collect to:

• Create and secure your account, and sync your favourites and quiz progress across devices
• Send you the push notifications you have opted into (such as word of the day or quiz reminders) — you can change these anytime in the app’s notification settings
• Respond to enquiries and support requests
• Monitor and improve app performance and stability
• Understand how users interact with the app to guide future development
• Comply with legal obligations

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties.

The SailingTerms app may use third-party services that collect information used to identify you. These may include:

• Apple App Store / Google Play Store: Subject to their respective privacy policies when you download the app.
• Sign in with Google / Apple: If you choose social sign-in, Google or Apple confirms your identity to us; their privacy policies govern that step.
• OneSignal: Delivers our push notifications. OneSignal processes your device push token on our behalf to deliver the notifications you opt into.
• Google AdMob: Displays advertising in the app — see the “Advertising” section below for details.
• Crash reporting services: Anonymous crash logs may be collected to help us fix bugs.

We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party services you use in connection with SailingTerms.

The SailingTerms app shows a limited number of advertisements, served by Google AdMob, a third-party advertising service provided by Google. Advertising helps us keep the app free to use.

To serve and measure ads, Google may collect:

• Device advertising identifier: the IDFA on iOS or the Advertising ID on Android, used for ad delivery, frequency capping, fraud prevention and — only with your consent — personalised advertising.
• IP address: used to derive your approximate (city-level) location for ad serving.
• Ad interaction data: such as which ads were shown and whether they were viewed or tapped.

This advertising data is processed by Google and is not linked to your SailingTerms account. We never share your name, email address, or any other account information with advertisers.

Your choices:

• In the UK, EEA and other regulated regions, you will be asked for consent before any personalised advertising is shown, via Google’s consent form. You can review or withdraw your consent at any time in the app under Settings → Privacy & Ad Choices. If you decline, you may see non-personalised ads or no ads at all.
• On iOS, the app will ask for permission before tracking via the App Tracking Transparency prompt. You can change this at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. If you decline, ads are still shown but are not personalised using cross-app tracking.
• On Android, you can reset or delete your Advertising ID and opt out of ads personalisation in your device’s Google settings.

We retain personal data only for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes outlined in this policy or as required by law. Account data (including favourites and quiz progress) is kept for as long as your account exists. Contact form submissions are kept for a maximum of 12 months. Anonymous usage data may be retained indefinitely.

You can delete your account at any time in the app under Settings → Delete Account. This permanently removes your account and the personal data associated with it, including favourites, quiz history, and push notification registrations. You can also request deletion by emailing us at info@sailingterms.app.

Depending on your location, you may have rights under applicable data protection laws, including:

• The right to access personal data we hold about you
• The right to request correction or deletion of your personal data
• The right to object to or restrict certain processing
• The right to data portability

The SailingTerms website may use cookies or similar technologies to enhance your browsing experience. These are limited to strictly necessary cookies required for the site to function. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.

SailingTerms is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us immediately.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
